What To Do when Backyard smells like cat urine

If you are one of the many users of Synthetic Grass products around the nation, I’m sure you are familiar with the problem of dealing with pet odors smells. Cat urine smells can be a problem with synthetic grass installations and its important to treat the odor-affected areas as quickly as possible, before the smells become a real and persistent problem. One of the reasons why urine on synthetic grass smells stronger than on regular grass is simply heat. Synthetic grass is made of synthetic materials, like plastic, which retains the heat of direct sunlight. In fact, it can get up to 6-10 times hotter than regular plant grass. To understand why urine is so difficult to remove, we need to be aware of how synthetic grass is laid and what happens to the urine when your pet has visited. Synthetic grass is usually built on crush rock and sand with small holes in the material to allow for drainage. When urine comes in contact it may seep down through the grass and into the rock and sand layers underneath. When urine dries, it crystallizes, and it is these uric acid crystals that remain underneath the grass and are difficult to remove. As soon as there is a bit of heat or humidity, these uric acid crystals (which are the main source of the urine smell) activate and release the urine odor.

Detergents or water alone will not break down these non-soluble uric acid crystals and they will remain, as will the odor. Only a bio-enzymatic formulation found in urine FREE will remove these crystals for good.

  • urineFREE – is Australia’s leading urine stain & odor remover. It’s a guaranteed all-in-one bio-enzymatic product that will permanently remove and clean urine stains and urine odors from carpets, fabric, wood floors, cement, tiles, porcelain, mattresses and other surfaces. And it cleans and remove ALL urine odors and urine stains whether dog urine, cat urine, other pet urine, human urine and household accidents.

If you don’t know how to use Urine free, here are some tips on how to apply it on your Synthetic Grass on the affected odor area:

(The amount needed depends on the size of your pet, the amount of urine that has been deposited and how much your lawn absorbs. Just remember that there is no exact quantity needed as every case is different and the more urine you have in your synthetic grass, the more urineFREE you will need.)

  • It is best not to use urineFREE in the heat of the day. Because urineFREE needs dwell time to work and heat or direct sunlight leads to quicker evaporation. Late afternoon/evening when the sun is down is best and make sure the grass is not wet before applying.
  • Using an ordinary garden sprayer or urineFREE’s battery-operated sprayer (which fits our 2 and 5 L containers) saturate the grass so that urineFREE penetrates down to where the urine has accumulated. urineFREE must meet all the urine to be 100% effective.
  • After the first application, allow to air-dry. This may take up to an hour to overnight. If possible, you may want to cover the area with a plastic sheet such as a plastic tarp to keep urineFREE moist for as long as possible. (NOTE: When urineFREE is wet it is working, and if urineFREE is dry it stops.)
  • Once dry, hose down the grass to remove any residue from the bio-enzymatic activity.
  • Once the odor is gone then apply weekly for maintenance or as required.

With this tip and what product, you should use to remove the cat urine odor on your synthetic grass, you have now an odorless lawn which you and your kids can enjoy!
